Egypt would be an ideal destination for travellers, despite only 34% of hostels having female specific rooms, there are over 5.8million Instagram tags for Cairo, making it Insta-worthy.
Moscow, Russia has the lowest overall score for female-friendliness, only 24% of their hostels include female only dorms, and the search volumes for female solo travellers is very low, indicating that there is a lack of females visiting alone. Additionally, Russia’s SDG score is ‘poor’ (67.2), showing that the country’s gender policies and issues are not being effectively tackled.
Johannesburg in South Africa has the second lowest overall score, with only 26.9% of women stating that they feel safe walking alone at night.
Mecca, Singapore and Dubai were not included on the list due to lack of data.
*Methodology: Used Euromonitor International’s top 100 city destinations from 2019 to compile our list, taking the most visited city in each of the included destinations to make the top 30. Then used Hostel World to discover what percentage of hostels in each ranking city has the highest number of female dorms available. Looked at the 2019 Sustainable Development Goals Gender Index score from the Equal Measures 2030 report. Included the community safety perception among women from the Women Peace and Security Index. This percentage is the number of women aged 15 and above who report they “feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live”. Analysed the Google search volumes for the terms ‘female solo travel’ in each country and city to discover the number of people searching for it – this indicates the number of women who are considering visiting. |
