Elba Island and Tuscan Archipelago: Pearls in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea

Legend says that Venus, emerging from the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, lost some of the pearls of its precious necklace in her hurry to reach the shore. The seven pearls resurfaced and became the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri, and Gorgona. Today, the islands are known as wonders of the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Every island is a unicum of history and landscapes characterized by an extraordinary environmental heritage, protected by the PNAT- Parco Naturale dell’Arcipelago Toscano (Arcipelago Toscano Natural Park) and under the aegis of Mab (Man and the Biosphere) UNESCO program, to enhance the areas that safeguard the balance between man and nature.  Elba is also on top of the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary, making the surrounding sea even more valuable from an environmental point of view.

You can enjoy the uniqueness and the beauty of these pearls any season of the year. Each island is different from the other. The islands have a story, a legend, or a feature that fascinates and enchants visitors, whether they arrive for a single weekend or choose the island and its archipelago as a destination for the trip. If it is impossible to resist the charm of the sea in summer, history, culture, and nature offer many possibilities for an exciting journey in other periods.

The Archipelago is almost entirely open to visitors starting from Elba Island, the main one, which is the ideal starting point for a holiday to discover a thousand views of this fascinating corner of the sea, with its long tradition of tourist hospitality. Choosing the Tuscan Archipelago as a destination means discovering a thousand destinations that the pearls of Tuscany offer, combining the advantages of a permanent trip with those of a traveling one. Capraia, Montecristo, Giglio, and Pianosa can be reached directly from Elba Island during summer.

ELBA ISLAND

Isola d’Elba – ©R.Ridi

Even just the „capital of the Archipelago“ is worth the trip. With over 200 beaches, nature trekking, amazing views, historical routes that cover 3000 years of history, artisan shops, nightlife, and excellent food and wine tradition awarded worldwide, Elba offers something surprising every day. It is impossible to summarize in a few lines an experience that deserves to be lived more than told. The variety of offers of the island is too wide that allows you to build your holiday formula, mixing different experiences, from the full relaxation ones to the total active activities.

PIANOSA

Isola di Pianosa – ©R.Ridi

Pianosa is a flat island (the only altitude measures only 29 meters) and has remained virtually intact biologically until a few years ago, thanks to the prison which prevented the access to the island, and which today is open only to 250 visitors per day. Do not miss a visit to the Roman Villa of Agrippa Postumo, nephew of Emperor Augustus, now the subject of recovery by the Italian Ministry of Culture for the exceptional archaeological heritage preserved in it. However, lovers of the underwater world cannot miss the dive in Cala Giovanna (with authorized diving centers) to discover the submerged nature among the most fascinating of the entire archipelago.

MONTECRISTO

©R.Ridi

The charming island praised by Alexandre Dumas in his masterpiece the Count of Montecristo is today an unspoiled and wild place where nature is the undisputed master. Visiting this portion of the Archipelago is not a classic „tourist visit“: it is an exclusive and immersive experience, limited to about 2,000 participants every year to preserve the biodiversity of the island that has made Montecristo a universal heritage. On the island, it is forbidden to stay overnight, swim or fish. It is the perfect experience for every lover of nature trails looking for the essence of living in harmony with the environment.

CAPRAIA

ISOLA DI CAPRAIA – zona DATTERO – ©R.Ridi

Among the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, Capraia is the closest to Corsica. They are separated only by a stretch of sea that looks directly towards the Cap Corse. Its history is quite troubled: inhabited since prehistoric times, assaulted by pirates, and object of continuous handovers between the various potentates because of its strategic position. Today Capraia is the perfect place to totally relax: two hundred inhabitants, a handful of houses, and beautiful naturalistic landscapes. Don’t miss the night observation of the starry sky that is extremely impressive thanks to the low light pollution.

GIGLIO

©R.Ridi

As mentioned in Giulio Cesare’s De Bello Civili, the island was set of one of the most dramatic moments of the struggles between the Maritime Republics that also marked the moment of the greatest power of the Ghibellines in their historical opposition to the Guelphs. In addition, the Genoese fleet engaged the Pisan fleets in Giglio’s waters with the victory of the Pisan. Do not miss a visit to the towers, fortresses, and defensive walls of the island.

HOW TO REACH ELBA AND THE OTHER ISLANDS OF THE ARCHIPELAGO?

Elba Island is easily accessible by ferry from the port of Piombino in just an hour of navigation, or by plane from Milan Linate, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, and Lugano (with Silver Air); Bastia, Parma, Genoa, and Perugia (FlyLeOne). The islands of the Archipelago are accessible by ferry from Aquavision during summer.

Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey

Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi

Sir Bani Yas Island

Mini Suite/ Junior Suite
Connecting Rooms/ InterConnecting Rooms

SFAT: Monastero Santa Rosa, Amalfi Coast

Originally a Dominican monastery built in the 17th C., Monastero Santa Rosa sits perched majestically along the heart of the Amalfi Coast within the fishing village of Conca dei Marini, conveniently located between Amalfi and Positano.  Striking the perfect balance of seclusion without solitude, no other place along the coast quite captures the area’s rich history while also offering quintessential luxury Italian hospitality.

Leave the outside world behind and enter one of the most serene locations on the Amalfi Coast, where the bustle of town life and winding roads of traffic become a distant memory and are replaced with sounds of birds chirping and fountains trickling as well as abundant aromas of rose, jasmine, and citrus.  Lush gardens, appropriately planted to represent all of the beauty that the Mediterranean fauna and flora have to offer, provide an escape from it all.  Relax, sit back and let the botanical wonderland intoxicate you with all of its pleasures.

As Spring arrives on the Amalfi Coast, Monastero Santa Rosa truly begins to come to life. The terraced levels of immaculately kept gardens begin waking up, slowly unraveling their beauty as the season transpires, offering a constantly evolving landscape that frames the panoramas as you gaze towards the Gulf of Salerno. The gardens of Santa Rosa are a Mediterranean paradise in the tradition of the exclusive estates and palatial Italian villas of yore.

Comprised over two generous levels, the 20 rooms and suites, where the monastery’s nuns once lived out their lives, offer both privacy and exclusivity, while offering the intimacy and familiarity of staying in a home away from home…only one where all of your needs are tended to.

SFAT: The Best Luxury Resorts in the Caribbean

In the Caribbean, luxury is different. Of course, any great resort must have excel in the fundaments of luxury: food and drink; interior and exterior design and, most importantly, service.  But Caribbean luxury transcends that. In the Caribbean, luxury is also about beauty, about space; about the natural environment; about the sights, the aromas, about the art of experiencing the outdoors. In other words, it’s about all of the things that travelers prize most right now.

Compiling our annual ranking of the best luxury resorts is always a challenge; and this year, even more so. But the properties that made this list combined exacting quality in the aforementioned technical areas (including, of course, health and safety protocols) with that most important criterion of all: how special a resort makes you feel.

Here are our favorite luxury resorts for 2021.

best luxury resorts caribbean
The Shore Club, Turks and Caicos Now more than ever, travelers are drawn to residential resorts — properties that combine all the amenities of a home or villa with the ones you get at a hotel. Indeed, the things we want in a hotel experience have changed — and that’s what’s made the Shore Club Turks and Caicos even more of a masterwork. This Long Bay beach stunner has some of the most gorgeous — and gorgeously appointed — rooms you’ll find in the Caribbean, married with marvelous service, an exceptional culinary offering (including the wonderful new Almond Tree), a world-class spa and the kind of impeccable service that answers every request without ever being intrusive.
The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, Paradise Island, The Bahamas There’s always been a magical property to this resort, which first opened in 1962 as the “it” resort in The Bahamas and, well, still is. Now as a Four Seasons, it’s taken things to another level, with outstanding service, the same sweeping rooms and villas), its signature Versailles gardens (a wonder of the Caribbean) and the resort’s party piece: the blindingly white sands of Cabbage Beach. Photo by Rupert Pearce.
The Ritz-Carlton, St Thomas This property was always beautiful; but now, following a $100 million renovation, it’s better than ever, with wonderful rooms and suites filled with little amenites like motion-activated lights and sprawling terraces, an impressive health and safety program, and one of the most spectacular settings in all of the US Virgin Islands.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Baoase Luxury Resort, Curacao Somehow, this place is still something of a secret in the travel world. But it just might have some our favorite rooms in the Caribbean, with a Bali-meets-the-Caribbean aesthetic, many with private jacuzzis or plunge pools. And then there’s the restaurant, which serves up Michelin-level food every meal of the day.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Eclipse at Half Moon, Jamaica The newest, sexiest resort in Jamaica is Eclipse, the brand-new resort-within-a-resort at the legendary Half Moon resort in Montego Bay. It’s a dramatic new design, one that takes the historic property to the forefront of Caribbean design, while preserving the authenticity and grandeur that always defined the original.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Silversands, Grenada Grenada is increasingly drawing luxury travelers, and that’s in large part due to the debut of Silversands, a sleek, crisp, stunning resort on the island’s flagship Grand Anse Beach. The property marries high-tech, high-design guest rooms with an impressive dining offering and what’s billed as the longest pool in all of the Caribbean.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Eden Roc Cap Cana Cap Cana is the luxury enclave of greater Punta Cana, and in the area’s sea of large resorts, this is a full-fledged jewel. The only Relais & Chateaux in the Dominican Republic, this is a hotel for gourmands, for those in search of indulgent, opulent, vacations. There are two wings here: one on the beach and one just a stroll away, and it’s the latter, with its grand private plunge pools, that is the star of the show.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Park Hyatt St Kitts This is the only Park Hyatt-branded resort in the Caribbean, and it’s become the halo hotel for increasingly hip St Kitts. The five-star resort fits perfectly into the natural environment of St Kitts’ Southeast Peninsula, with crisp, modern rooms, an impressive slate of restaurants (including the out-of-this-world Stone Barn) and inspired design that bridges centuries of history on the island.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Sandy Lane, Barbados You can’t put together a list of the best luxury resorts in the Caribbean and not include Sandy Lane. It’s the kind of Caribbean icon that is a fixed point, a timeless resort that’s always defined the best of Caribbean hospitality — and still does, from its endlessly impressive amenities to its elegant, rarefied design.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Mandarin Oriental, Canouan The only Mandarin Oriental in the Caribbean (another is in development in the Cayman Islands), the former Pink Sands Club is a throwback to the jet-set age, a glamorous, colorful, clubby property that just so happens to be set in one of the most beautiful corners of all the Caribbean.
Le BarthelemySt Barth There’s no more competitive luxury hotel market in the Caribbean (and maybe the world) than St Barth, but the 44-room-and-suite Le Barthelemy has quietly been vaulting right to the top, with a jaw-dropping Grand Cul de Sac setting and fabulous rooms designed by Sybille de Margerie.
best luxury resorts caribbean
Belmond Cap Juluca, Anguilla Any great hotel in Anguilla has to begin with the beach, and the powder-white sands of Maundays Bay is one of the most incredible beaches in the region. But Cap Juluca is more than that, from its sparkling Moorish-style rooms and villas to its transcendent spa, and the way the place has of always managing to make you feel, well, grand.

THE BEST OF SANTORINI
